The Pros of Terminating or Transiting Through the SLC Airport

Salt Lake City Airport ranks very high in on-time performance, as evidenced by quick TSA prescreening and convenient light rail line connecting travelers to downtown Salt Lake City at Terminal 1's south end. The other huge pluses include: friendly staff, free Wi-Fi, immaculate terminal signs and comfy terminal seating. The free Wi-Fi and power outlets are affixed throughout the airport. SLC also boasts some of the best airport restaurants serving local delicacies. If you love Mexican cuisine, you can check out the hugely popular quick serve at caf? Rio. The other trendy eateries and food courts at the airport include the well-established Market Street Grill, French Meadow Bakery and Salt Lake Pizza and Pasta. These restaurants are all covered by the airport security apparatus.

The Cons of Terminating or Transiting Through SLC Airport

The overall outlay of the airport is modern and refreshing, but one major downside is the relatively long walk to the baggage claim area in Terminal 1's, B Concourse. The smoking restrictions at the airport led to the removal of smoking lounges inside the gate sections, a move that inconvenienced some travelers looking for quick smoking breaks. The lounges are now perched on the lower floors of Courses A and B.

Fun Things to Do at The Salt Lake City Airport

Shoppers will appreciate the convenience of the Utah Market with its wide selection of gifts that include intuitive books and various other items. On the sidewalks, there is a collection of arts on display. The other amenities at the airport include; business center, ATM machines, Duty Free shopping centers, currency exchange bureaus, DVD and Movies store and child playing units at Concourses A and B. The airport has 3 passenger terminals with 5 concourses with a cumulative 83 gates. The International Terminal has two Concourses, E and D. Terminal 1 also has two Concourses, A and B while Terminal 2 has Concourse C.

The History of SLC Airport

Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is located about 4 miles from downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. The civilian and military airport ranks as the 15th busiest in the US. It serves as the hub of several airlines, including Delta Air Lines and SkyWest Airlines. The other large carriers operating here are Alaska Airlines, Southwest Airlines and American Airlines. The airport's origins can be traced to 1911 when it began as a grazing airfield.

The first terminal and administration block at the airport was erected in 1933 at a modest cost of about $50,000. The development was followed by the entry of United Airlines that connected Salt Lake City to San Francisco and New York. The US Air Forces established a base here during WWII. The airport has since been upgraded with the addition of a new terminal, access road modernization and expansion of baggage claim facilities.
